Ashkenazy’s Romeo and Juliet

Vladimir Ashkenazy returns to the SSO to conduct a Romantic program inspired by the greatest love story of all.

Ashkenazy begins this concert with one of his favourite orchestral pieces. Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet fantasy overture is possibly, he says, the very best musical reflection of Shakespeare’s tragedy ever composed. But if it has a competitor, it’s Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet ballet music. The timeless tale of young love brings out Prokofiev’s romantic soul and his gift for irresistible melodies, and Ashkenazy has chosen some the best-loved highlights from the ballet to make a musical drama for the concert hall. Between these two masterpieces, Arabella Steinbacher will bring her confident virtuosity and gorgeous tone to Bruch’s first violin concerto, the Romantic showstopper that’s still at the top of listener polls 150 years after its premiere.
