Edo de Waart returns to Sydney with Beethoven’s Ninth and Haydn’s magnificent London Symphony.

When Haydn’s final symphony premiered in 1795, his audience heard something grand, impressive and “very noisy”, the work of the most famous composer of the day – more famous even than Beethoven. Jump forward three decades and it was Beethoven who was impressing audiences with a symphony that was grander, more impressive and, with full orchestra and choir, even noisier. More than that, with his Ninth Symphony, Beethoven aspired to speak for humanity, to be a voice for freedom and to communicate through music a vision of optimism and joy. Which is why this monumental and inspiring symphony still resonates with audiences everywhere. A bravura program to showcase the SSO, conducted by former chief conductor Edo de Waart.
