Description

It’s a melting pot of musical influences in this one-hour concert of intimate chamber music.

This concert makes an unexpected match: Heitor Villa-Lobos from tropical Brazil and Edvard Grieg from Norway, the land of glaciers and fjords. But they find common ground in inspiration taken from the past. Villa-Lobos’s duo for oboe and bassoon (featuring SSO principals Diana Doherty and Todd Gibson-Cornish) was composed under the influence of Bach, with marvellously weaving melodies in an extended dialogue between the two instruments. Bach’s presence is mixed with the exotic colours and rhythms of Brazil when Catherine Hewgill leads the cellos of the SSO in Bachianas brasileiras No.1. In between: Grieg’s suite of dances “in olden style” pays tribute to Ludvig Holberg, the Molière of the North.
