Join the percussionists of the SSO for a fascinating and thrilling musical journey.

This concert begins in West Africa with Nigel Westlake’s celebratory music inspired by the balofon: marimba-like instruments built from kalabash gourds. Before you know it, you’ll be bobbing your head and tapping your feet. With just eight drums, large and small, German Eckhard Kopetzki evokes the hypnotic twisting of a giant serpent. Akira Nishimura creates a shimmering and ethereal sound world proving that percussion instruments can sing. Two Percy Grainger classics sit at the centre of the program, then Minoru Miki’s Marimba Spiritual is the show-stopper – a virtuoso piece for solo marimba and percussion. And the concert comes to a dramatic conclusion with Hungarian István Márta’s imaginary revolution in a toy shop. Bring together the SSO percussionists, an amazing array of instruments and a world of cultures and anything is possible!
