Enjoy a collection of magical music by Tchaikovsky, Rossini and Ravel, performed live by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Tchaikovsky is one of the most famous composers of all time, particularly celebrated for his ballet music. For this special event, the Sydney Symphony will perform a suite from his most enduring work for ballet – Swan Lake. A ballet about love and magic requires sublime music to match and here Tchaikovsky gives the world just that – music so grand and transcendent that it is continually performed not only in ballet houses but in concert halls around the world.
Its dazzling musical colours and supreme melodies conjure up a world of swans, magicians and princes.
As a prelude, you will hear Rossini’s overture to his opera The Thieving Magpie. A signature piece from the master of Italian opera, it’s a work of jubilant themes and musical invention.
And in keeping with the magic of the evening, we perform Ravel’s Mother Goose suite which takes its inspiration from fairy-tale characters and – Thumbelina, Beauty and the Beast and Sleeping Beauty all make appearances – painted as if in watercolour by Ravel’s gentle musical palette. The most magical music is saved for last, The Fairy Garden, which blossoms into a radiant and spectacular finale.
Music from Swan Lake – Beauty and Magic is a special event for music lovers and ballet lovers alike.
